About This File
This is Thanatos, the god and personification of death.
In more ancient times, Thanatos was known to be merciless and hateful to both mortals and gods alike.
As time passed, Thanatos came to be seen as a beautiful Ephebe (Greek adolescent), becoming more associated with gentle passings instead of woeful demises. He was portrayed much like Eros - a boy with wings.
In his most famous myth, he was outwitted by the mortal Sisyphus, whom had slighted Zeus and brought forth his wrath. Zeus had ordered Thanatos to chain Sisyphus in Tartarus, and while there, Sisyphus slyly asked Thanatos to demonstrate how the chains worked. As Thanatos was granting the wish, Sisyphus trapped Thanatos in the chains instead.
